HCDE 503: Wk 3 - Food Insecurity Research Progress

Research Phase : Sense-Making

In the HCDE 503 class, we were assigned to work on a group project called " Working Design Example" to help us test out the UX toolkit along the way. Our problem space is " Food Insecurity ". A lot of good tools were introduced each week. Here is a recap:

Wk 1 - Affinity Mapping

We chip in ideas and findings from initial research through reading articles and internet.
Then, as a class, we arranged these findings in relation to each other.
After that, we categorized them. Some of the categories include : poverty cycle, environmental factors, education. For our group, we are interested looking into issues of food insecurity through the lens of " neighborhood & infrastructure".

Wk 3
[1] Mapping

As a team, we first mapped out the stakeholders in our ecology to help us identify what kind of players to research deeper into to identify problems and design opportunities. Who are these people who are contributing to or being affected by " food insecurity" ?

[2] User Journey

As a team, we agreed on picking " seniors with limited mobility" as the persona. We are interested in know this individual's experience through the process of meal-planning, to cultivate our empathy to see their pain point. Along this journey, we are interested in finding out the infrastructure, dependency and people they have encountered.

Some questions to ask:
- What does he encounter along the way?
- What hinders him?
- Where is the design opportunity?

[3] Value Proposition

We then filled out this chart to sketch out the concept. This is still work in progress.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since I have an architectural background and have been through architectural school for 6 years. I always have comparison in my mind about the UX design method vs the Architectural Design method. The UX pedagogy and architectural pedagogy is something I constantly think about as well. I can write more about this next time when I cleared up my thoughts :)
