Wk 7: Reflect on Basadur Workshop
In week 7 class, we did a workshop with our Basadur profile in class.
When I got my result back, I was surprised to see I scored 25% at all quadrants.
Personally, I identify myself most with " Conceptualizer" , then " Implementer", then " Generator" and "Optimizer" last. The guest speaker suggested that usually the diagonal quadrants " Conceptualizer" and " implementer " tend to have conflicts with each other. However, I found it particularly interesting because I identify " Conceptualizer" as my dominant mode for problem-solving, while " implementer" second. At the class activity, I picked the " conceptualizer" group to join and I can identify myself with the conceptualizer peers. Here are some points that I definitely echo:
- Visualize " Big Picture"
- Can be detached
- Care more quality vs quantity
However, at the same time, I also identify with the " implementer" group:
- Enjoy getting things done
- Like to try things out rather than mentally test them
- like to be told " what to do" and take action
Although I thought I identify myself more as " conceptualizer", I began to think deeper to examine why my test result has no dominant quadrants. Is there any subconscious traits I am not self-aware of ? When I reflect on my upbringing, design education and career, they have indeed shaped my problem-solving mode. I think I am gifted as a "conceptualizer"
and " generator".... I prefer generation options... and divergence than evaluation and convergence... connects seemingly unrelated observations into an integrated explanation... have a lot of patience....
Then environmental factors start to push me towards implementer,
And meeting optimizer in my life has opens me up into their mindset and I slowly accepted and adopted their way of problem-solving ...
Having gone through architectural school, then working as an architect in the past decade, I have went through numerous cycle of design process ,,, from generator ... conceptualizing... implementation... to optimizers.... take abstract ideas into solution and plans.... it has really shaped me... and trained me to refine my weakness... stretch my mind... and time constraints to put things into action with limited amount of time...
Another teammate, Dinah, scored similarly... I can see myself in her sometimes... My personality is also more of a flexible person... I can easily adjust myself and adopt different roles to fill the hole within a team.
Environmental factors play a role.
My questions and challenge:
- Want to have a dominant conceptualizer... to find a speciality and excel in it
- Feel like I want to do everything, and have an interests in everything
Reflect on the pinch and talk about it
In my team, we have a majority of implementors. Our disagreement came when our team started doing a user journey map and identifying design opportunities. I disagreed with the majority of the team about narrowing down a solution and user group too early. At early design/ research phase, I think it will be appropriate to ask questions there open up possibilities instead of deciding on a very specific and concrete one solution.
